Nikita Mikhalkov: "Gaft is another planet, absolutely individual one, he never fitted anywhere." Oleg Tabakov: "Valentin is a pure soul, and he is able to love, to be faithful."
Valentin Gaft. Famous. Contradictory. Strong. How long nobody believed in his talent, how many theaters he changed, how he strived, how he argued, how he was abear for his happiness, was in love and left. He survived the loss of his daughter, met his adult son, who he had never seen before. In his eighty years, it would seem, he found sanctuary in his family and loving woman. But his heart is still going through the past and the present. Valentin Gaft: "As though our world is mad, and it is afraid to be out of touch. I lived in a hurry, and I should have slowed down."
His own children are not beside him. His daughter died. His son, whom he did not know for a long time, and his grandson live on the other side of the world, in Brazil. It was Olga Ostroumova who helped him survive the sorrow and happiness. They got married in 1996, when both of them had children from previous marriages. Olga Ostroumova’s son and daughter, her grandchildren are close and dear to Gaft.
After graduating from the Moscow Art Theatre School, young actor Gaft was changing one theater for another for 12 years. Quarrelsome, impulsive, intractable.
His first role in the movie was an episode in the movie "Murder on Dante Street". Valentin was 21 years old. Not everyone liked his work in this film. The actor was tense, embarrassed and afraid of cameras. "It was a mistake to choose this boy! Why did we take such a shy boy?" — told a second director behind the actor’s back. And Gaft heard this. And, as if in everyone’s despite, he then featured in numerous works (he played in more than a hundred movies).
Someone did not like Gaft because of his difficult disposition, someone refused to work with him, and closed the door in front of him. But he stopped at nothing. His profession filled his whole life.
He made a name for himself in the cinema and became a lead actor of the famous "Sovremennik".
Gaft was married for several times. He always succeeded in his profession, but his marriages broke up. He blames no one, but himself.
Olga is Valentin Gaft’s daughter, born in his second marriage with ballerina Inna Eliseeva. Olga lived with her mother after her parents divorced. Inna and Valentin could not be together. Gaft’s only daughter died when she was 29 years old.
Gaft was born and raised in Moscow, Sokolniki. On the eve of the actor’s jubilee, he went down on the subway and went to the places of his memory.
The film was featured by Olga Ostroumova, Oleg Tabakov, Aleksandr Shirvindt, Galina Volchek, Liya Akhedzhakova, Elena Sanaeva, Sergei Garmash, Chulpan Khamatova, Nikita Mikhalkov, and Lyudmila Ivanova.
