This is the story of a “guy from the burbs” who made it to the top and became an undisputable authority at what he does. He has gained all the greatest world hockey awards, he is included into Top 6 greatest hockey players of the century. Even those who haven’t ever seen a hockey game in their life know his name.

Slava Fetisov entered CSKA sports school at the age of 12. This predetermined his whole life. In 1975, he was already part of the main team. At the 1978 World Championship in Prague, his world debut, Fetisov was awarded the title of the best defender.

Vyacheslav’s life was filled with lots of trials. At the age of 19, he was paralyzed. The doctors said that he would never be able to play hockey again, but he still didn’t leave the ice. Some time later, his beloved younger brother, who was also promised a shining hockey career, died in a car accident. Fetisov started seriously thinking of giving up hockey. Only his mother telling him that from then on he should play for two gave him strength.Vyacheslav Fetisov is one of the best defenders in the history of Soviet hockey. For many years, he was the captain of CSKA and the USSR national team. Fetisov was one of the famous five, which apart from him included Sergei Makarov, Vladimir Krutov, Igor Larionov, and Alexei Kasatonov. Thanks to these five, the USSR team was called “The Red Machine” in the West.

In 1989, Fetisov became one of the first ex-USSR hockey players to sign a contract with an NHL team and leave for the USA. Only he knows what it was worth back then. In America, he miraculously survived one more car accident.He believes in fate and thinks that one always ought to aim high. This is the rule he follows throughout his entire life.
